Few games have gone through such a turbulent development journey as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. From its spectacular reveal in 2021 to rumors of project cancellation and changes in the development studio, the fate of the remake of one of the best RPGs of all time has been questioned multiple times.
But it seems that the story is finally getting a happier continuation.
According to information from a Star Wars insider known as 100% Star Wars, the remake could be publicly showcased again as early as this year. Citing sources close to Saber Interactive, the same source states that the game's development has been progressing exceptionally well over the last three years and that a major re-reveal is expected by the end of 2026. Although there is no official confirmation yet, the information aligns with earlier reports suggesting that the project under Saber Interactive's leadership has finally found a stable development path. According to the same sources, the original plan was for the game to be released in 2027 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise. However, current estimates mention 2028 as a more likely release date, which would symbolically mark the 25th anniversary of the original KOTOR. The development team has reportedly been significantly expanding its ranks in recent years by hiring top experts from the gaming industry, while Saber Interactive is utilizing resources from nearly all of its internal studios to ensure the project receives the treatment such an important game deserves.
For younger players who haven't had the chance to experience the original, Knights of the Old Republic represents one of the most important RPG titles of all time. BioWare released it back in 2003, and its fantastic story, unforgettable characters, and one of the biggest twists in video game history have secured it a cult status that lasts even more than two decades later. Although BioWare never developed a direct sequel, Obsidian Entertainment introduced Knights of the Old Republic II two years later, which also gained cult status among fans of the series over time.
The desire for the return of Knights of the Old Republic has never faded. That is precisely why the reveal of the remake in 2021 sparked immense excitement among players. Unfortunately, that excitement was soon replaced by concern after rumors about troubled development, delays, and even possible project cancellation. Today, five years later, the situation finally looks much more optimistic. Of course, all information should still be taken with a grain of caution. Neither Saber Interactive nor the owners of the Star Wars license have officially confirmed plans for a re-reveal of the game or its possible release date. But if the latest rumors are true, the end of 2026 could finally mark the return of one of the most anticipated remakes of the last decade.
And let's be honest, few games deserve it more than Knights of the Old Republic. For millions of players, it was the first true proof that Star Wars could offer an RPG experience on par with the best representatives of the genre. More than twenty years later, the anticipation of its return is no less than on the first day.
